Now that summer is officially gone it’s time to reconsider your window treatments. The light and airy sheers that brought in the wonderful summer daylight, will only make you colder now! If you live in a climate where summer is only a fleeting thought and colder weather prevails, then it’s clearly time for window treatments for cold weather. You will also want to consider something more energy-efficient, so try putting up some new curtains or consider new window treatments all together.
Don’t just replace those sheers with ordinary curtains though. Look into some that will be more energy-efficient. I suggest looking for something that says Thermal or Black Out on the label. Both of these types of curtains are thicker and will cut down on how much cool air comes in through the curtain. No matter where you shop this type of curtain can be found just about anywhere, from big box stores to custom-made, in a variety of styles, fabrics and colors. Best part is that they start at as low as $9.99 a panel!
If you’re looking for an option that will block even more of the cold air coming in through the windows, consider cellular shades. A double cell cellular shade will block more cool air than a traditional window shade or curtain. If you want to increase energy efficiency consider going with black out fabric because it has a greater R Value. Meaning it insulates better. Most cellular shades are available special order, made to fit your windows. For a less expensive window treatment check out online or home improvement stores. I know that Lowe’s carries a blackout cordless cellular that can be cut down right in store. The quality is not as good as their custom ordered shades, but for the price it’s a good deal.
No matter what style of window treatments you prefer you can find something that will be more energy-efficient and still look good! You just have to know what you want and that there are options out there!
