Today a reader asks:
Dear Diva, I’m getting ready to start a major remodel and wanted to know what type of eco friendly flooring products were out there? I’m replacing the flooring in practically every room of my house. Thanks!
What a great question! Today there is an eco friendly product option for almost every home improvement project. And flooring is no exception! Whether you’re looking at carpeting, laminate, vinyl or even tile, you can find something that is “green.”
Carpeting can be eco friendly you just have to know where to look! Many carpets have low VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) and some are recyclable or made from recyclable materials. Take Mohawk SmartStrand for example, it is made from 37% renewable resources, which happen to be produced from corn sugar. SmartStrand is also one of my favorite carpets because it is very soft and stain resistant! Not mention very low VOC’s.
Want ease of installation? Check out the click-together options! Many click-together flooring products are eco friendly because you don’t have to use glue! You can find click-together flooring in laminate, hardwood, and cork! Check out Marmoleum for a flooring that is green and certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America as asthma and allergy friendly. Marmoleum is made from natural renewable resources and is also available in sheet goods like vinyl.
Don’t forget tile! Many types of tile can be eco friendly. An example of this is the Debris Series from Fireclay Tile. The Debris Series is made from over 60% recycled material. Such as waste glass and granite dust. The glazes are even leadless and VOC free! The Debris series is a ceramic tile, but you can also find decorative glass tiles available in recycled content from other manufacturers.
No matter what flooring type you are looking for, there are options available that are good for the environment. And sometimes all it takes to find out is just asking the sales person what they have that is “green.” If you aren’t sure what you want, check out the wealth of information online, some products can even be purchased online, others will help you find a dealer in your area. With a little research you can find the perfect eco friendly floors for your remodel!
