Master Bathroom Remodel: Should We Do It Ourselves?

01.29.2010 by Amanda Hartley //

Today Patricia asks,

My husband and I need a master bathroom remodel badly. My husband thinks we can do it ourselves but neither of us are that handy. I am afraid this will turn out to be a bigger project than he expects and we will end up over our heads. But he is afraid of how much money we will spend and feels that contractors can’t be trusted. Do you have any advice?

Some master bathroom remodels are too complex to do yourself. It’s important to know when your over your head. Often times smaller issues turn into bigger ones. If you have a severe mold or mildew issue, you can assume that it has gotten into your sub-floor and walls. Expect that when you clean up or take out the existing area more will have to be fixed.

Master bathroom remodels are seldom what we expect. In this case, it’s important to get a contractor to do some if not all of the work for you. When you are choosing a contractor look for one that is licensed and bonded.

Ask around both with friends and neighbors and online. Ask for references. Go to the Better Business Bureau and make sure there are no complaints about the company you are going with. If you do your homework you have a better chance of getting the job done quickly and right the first time. This will also help you save money in the long run.

Do you have questions about the selecting or the installation of: tile, carpet wall treatments (window blinds, etc)? Then email me your tale of woe and perhaps I will be able to answer your questions right here at the Home Makeover Diva Blog!

Healthy Carpet Choices

Today Pamela writes, Hello Diva, Please help me as I’m confused on which eco-friendly/healthy carpet to choose for my bedroom!  I know wool is good but I cannot handle the idea of bugs leaving eggs in it.  After reading the blog I know my choices are: Mohawk Smartstrand vs Dupont Sorona vs Beaulieu’s Bliss.  I even read […]

Mohawk Smartstrand vs. Shaw R2X Carpet

Recently I found a series of videos on YouTube that reminded me of the Mac vs. Windows commercials we’ve all seen on TV. The difference however, was that these videos were for Mohawk Smartstrand vs. Shaw R2X Carpet!  Needless to say I was intrigued. With the exception of Armstrong, I’ve found that most flooring commercials […]
